Big In Japan Has A Massive Goal: 100 iPhone Apps In A Year

Big In Japan Has A Massive Goal: 100 iPhone Apps In A Year

As the number of apps in the App Store rapidly approaches 100,000, the fact that growth is still accelerating is pretty staggering. It’s not hard to see why when app development houses are pumping out dozens of apps in short order. But at that volume, most of those apps aren’t going to be very good [...more]

A Chink In Android’s Armor

A Chink In Android’s Armor

75 million phones running the Android operating system will be sold in 2012 , says research firm Gartner, which if right, would eventually make it the second most popular mobile OS after Symbian. This makes sense, because the operating system is free (unlike Windows Mobile), and it gives mobile carriers and handset manufacturers who aren’t Apple and RIM (the closed off guys) the ability to create a smartphone that someone may actually want to use. I’ve switched to Android now based largely on deep integration with Google Voice. [...more]

Letting Data Die A Natural Death

The big story today is about Microsoft subsidiary Danger losing all T-Mobile Sidekick customer data from their servers. Android Gets Its Own Everything Search Box

Android Gets Its Own Everything Search Box

We wrote about Google’s Quick Search Box (QSB) a few months ago when the product was officially launched. We found the Twitter plug-in particularly interesting because QSB was able to turn into a Twitter app that let you post Tweets from the search box itself. Video: Windows Mobile Turns Twitter Into Party Boy

Earlier this afternoon Fake Steve Jobs took one look at Microsoft’s new Windows Mobile commercial and wrote, “ Dancing Twitter icons do not translate into cutting-edge advertising .” I don’t know. I think the commercial is pretty good, but only because it seems to me the strategy here was to turn Internet Explorer, Outlook, Microsoft Messenger and the others into Party Boy from Jackass [...more]

Analyst: Android to become #2 mobile OS by 2012

Analyst: Android to become #2 mobile OS by 2012

According to Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney, Google’s fledgling Android OS has the potential to become the number two mobile operating system (behind Symbian OS) by 2012. This certainly sounds like a bit of a stretch considering that currently Android is operating on less than 2% of the world’s smartphones. However, in a recent interview with Computerworld , Dulaney said that he sees Google’s open mobile platform expanding to upwards of 14% market penetration over the next 24 months [...more]

AT&T Greenlights VoIP For the iPhone. Too Bad Google Voice Isn’t VoIP.

AT&T Greenlights VoIP For the iPhone. Too Bad Google Voice Isn’t VoIP.

Yesterday, we saw a Vonage app hit the App Store, which seemed to go against Apple and AT&T’s previous stance that VoIP apps that work over the 3G (and 2G) network would not be allowed in the App Store. Turns out there’s been a policy change. [...more]
